Film Plot
Parrish McLean lives with his mother Ellen on Sala Post's tobacco plantation in the Connecticut River Valley. His mother winds up marrying Sala's rival Judd Raike, ruthless planter who wants to drive Sala out of business. Judd insists that Parrish learn the business from the ground up.
BBFD Involvment
A majority of the filming of the movie was shot at various actual tobacco farms in East Windsor, South Windsor, and Windsor. The scene that in which the Broad Brook Fire Department was shot was located on the Daly farm. The barn was one of the larger barns located in the farm and to enhance the scene, hollywood special effects department had fuel pumped into the inside of the barn and with the use of tobacco irrigation pipe and sprinkler heads, sprayed fuel against the walls of the barn while it was burning. In addition, not wanting to destroy actual tobacco crops, the special effects team used broom sticks with leaves (don't know what kind, only that it was not tobacco) taped to them. If you get a chance to see the movie, watch the fire scene a couple of times. You can barely make out the Broad Brook, Connecticut on the door panel of the old truck 3 (Seen above). Carroll O'Conner only had a few lines in this movie (his Career was just starting), and during the filming, firefighters had gotten him so drunk that he could not say his lines. For the 1996 Connecticut State Firefighter Convention, attempts were made to have Carroll O'Conner be present, but his commitment to the filming of the TV show "Party of Five" limited his travel. On June 21, 2001, Actor Carroll O'Conner died. The apparatus seen above retired before Carroll O'Conner did in May of 1997.
